SANWO-OLU RECEIVES ‘HOUSING GOVERNOR OF THE YEAR’ AWARD

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has received the ‘Housing Governor of The Year’ award from Housing Circuit Limited in recognition of the good work and strides of the State Government in the provision of affordable homes.

Receiving the award at the Housing Summit held at Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel Abuja, recently, Governor Sanwo-Olu thanked the organisers for the award, noting that the recognition will further spur Lagos to do more in the provision of decent and affordable homes for the people.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by the State Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, explained that housing delivery is vital to the developmental plans of Lagos State due to its status as the economic hub of the nation as well as one the fastest growing megacities in the region.

He pointed out that the State Government invests in the housing sector in line with its T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda to reduce the challenges of housing deficit being experienced by residents.

The Governor said Given the rate at which the population of the State is increasing, there must be proactive measures to ensure that governmental interventions result in a positive impact on the people”.

It is the responsibility of a good government to be responsive to the issue of housing deficit, as this will help in no small measure to strengthen the security and enhance the quality of life of the people of the state. But beyond that, making decent homes available to the citizenry is actually a passion for us”, he added.

He revealed that the modalities of owning houses in State-owned estates are being simplified to make cheaper options available for all classes of people, adding that Lagos has the lowest mortgage of five percent advance payment of total cost while the remaining amount is spread over 10 years instalments.

The Governor, therefore, called on viable private investors who are grounded in innovative building technology that could result in speedy construction of cheaper and durable homes to partner with the State government for the speedy growth of the sector.

Sanwo-Olu averred that about 30 joint-venture housing schemes are either completed or soon to be completed in various parts of the State, stressing that through such initiatives the present administration has been able to revitalise the economy, create economic opportunities and also satisfy the yearnings for more homes among the citizenry.
